I started my martial arts journey over 30 years ago when I was 9 years old. Like most kids, I was inspired by Japanese anime and martial arts movies! During the summer of 1990, my parents noticed a new martial arts dojo opening up on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond California. The new dojo was just a couple of blocks away from my house and I asked my parents relentlessly to enroll me. After a few weeks, we finally walked into the new dojo and met Great Grandmaster Lloyd Craft! Little did I know at that moment, my life would change for the best forever. I studied under GGM Lloyd Craft for over 10 years and the day came when GGM decided to move down south to Santa Maria to open up a new dojo. At the time, I was in my early 20’s and decided to train under GGM Lloyd Craft’s Kajukenbo Instructor, GGM Stuart Rowe of Pinole Karate. I studied under GGM Stuart Rowe for over 5 years and under his mentorship, won the California Karate Championship circuit and won Grand Champion and Division Champion. Today, GGM Stuart Rowe is remembered as an martial arts icon and a leader within the Kajukenbo community; GGM Stuart Rowe passed away a couple of years ago. We all miss him dearly and I honor GGM Stuart through my teachings and classes today. If you walk into my dojo, you will see my grand champion Gi framed on my wall honoring GGM Stuart Rowe. Today, GGM Lloyd Craft and I are still teacher/student and have a strong father/son relationship! GGM lives down south in Santa Maria and I do my best during the pandemic to train with him. I currently hold three black belts under GGM Lloyd Craft and hold a 5th Degree Master Rank in GGM Lloyd Craft’s Shaolin Kenpo System. I opened up my dojo roughly 3 years ago with my wife Tina, my son Theodore, my daughters Valentina and Penelope to honor my mother and GGM Lloyd Craft and to share my martial arts journey with my students. People often ask what does the Crane stand for? My late mother’s spirit animal was the red top Japanese Crane and I named the dojo “Mighty Crane” to honor and remember her love for all people. I am the man, husband, father and leader today because of GGM Lloyd Craft and everything he has taught me over the last 30 years!
Thank you GGM Lloyd Craft! Welcome to Mighty Crane Kenpo!
Love,
Tony Haraguchi
